Why Zakopane matters

Zakopane is the gateway to the Tatra mountains, the highest range in the Carpathians and the playground of Polish hikers and skiers. The town has its own unmistakable style of carved wooden houses, a busy main street called Krupówki and plenty of highland food, from grilled smoked cheese to hearty soups. From here you can walk to turquoise mountain lakes, ride a cable car up to a summit or simply wander in the forest. It is busy in summer and winter, so choose your season to suit.

Talking points

  • Zakopane has its own highland wooden architecture, known as the Zakopane style.
  • Oscypek, a smoked sheep cheese, is the local snack to try.
  • Trailheads into the Tatras start almost at the edge of town.
