Why Zamość matters

Zamość was planned from scratch in the late 16th century by a Polish nobleman who wanted an ideal Renaissance town. He hired an Italian architect, and the result is a main square lined with arcaded houses, a lovely town hall and a layout that feels almost like a stage set. It sits in the quiet southeast of Poland, so you will often have it nearly to yourself, especially on weekdays outside summer.

Talking points

  • The town was designed from the start, rather than growing slowly over time.
  • The arcaded houses around the main square have their own Armenian-merchant story.
