Why Slovenia matters

Slovenia is small enough to see a lot in a week and pretty enough to make you want to stay longer. Ljubljana is a relaxed, car-light capital with riverside cafes under a hilltop castle. A short drive north brings you to Lake Bled and the Julian Alps. Head south and you are among giant caves and a dramatic castle built into a cliff, and a short hop west puts you on the Adriatic in a Venetian-style harbour town. It is clean, safe, green and proud of its outdoor culture.

Talking points

  • Slovenia has Alps, caves, forests and a short stretch of Adriatic coast, all within a few hours' drive.
  • Ljubljana is known for being green and walkable, with a car-free centre.
  • Lake Bled's island church is one of the most photographed scenes in Central Europe.
  • The Skocjan Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Beekeeping is a beloved tradition, and honey products are popular souvenirs.
