Why Akureyri Church matters

Akureyrarkirkja stands above the town at the top of a long staircase, a white building with lines that echo basalt columns. Inside, stained-glass windows glow, and a ship hangs from the ceiling in an old Icelandic tradition. It was designed by the same architect as Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík. The views over the fjord from the steps are lovely.

Talking points

  • It was designed by the architect behind Hallgrímskirkja.
  • A ship model hangs inside, a tradition in Iceland.
  • The steps give views over the fjord.
