Why Goðafoss matters

Goðafoss is a wide, curved waterfall on the Skjálfandafljót river. Its name means Waterfall of the Gods, and tradition says that when Iceland adopted Christianity around the year 1000, a lawspeaker threw his old pagan idols into the falls. Paths on both banks give different viewpoints. It's right beside the Ring Road, an easy stop between Akureyri and Mývatn.

Talking points

  • The name means Waterfall of the Gods.
  • Tradition links it to Iceland's conversion to Christianity.
