Why Dimmuborgir matters

Dimmuborgir, the Dark Castles, is a field of lava towers and arches formed when a lava lake drained away. Marked trails of different lengths weave through the formations, and it's easy to imagine trolls living here. Folk tales also connect it with the Yule Lads. It sits near the shore of Lake Mývatn.

Talking points

  • Lava formations resemble castles.
  • Marked trails wind through them.
  • Folklore links the area with trolls and Yule Lads.
