Why Ásbyrgi Canyon matters

Ásbyrgi is a horseshoe-shaped canyon with high cliffs surrounding a floor of birch forest and a small pond. Legend says it is the print of Sleipnir, the eight-legged horse of the god Odin. Paths lead around the canyon floor and to a viewpoint on the rim. It's a sheltered, peaceful contrast to the raw landscapes nearby.

Talking points

  • Legend links it to Odin's horse.
  • Birch forest fills the canyon floor.
  • A lookout on the rim gives a view of the whole shape.
