For storytellers

Why Ålesund matters

Ålesund burned down in 1904, and was rebuilt in just a few years in a fanciful Art Nouveau style, with turrets, spires and decorative details on every street. The result is one of the prettiest harbour towns in Norway. A short climb up a staircase takes you to a viewpoint over islands and sea. It's the gateway to Geirangerfjord and the Atlantic Road, and a good place for seafood.

Talking points

  • A great fire in 1904 led to the town's Art Nouveau rebuild.
  • A staircase leads to the Aksla viewpoint.
  • Geirangerfjord is a day trip away.
