Why Baths of Caracalla matters

This was a vast leisure complex with pools, gardens, libraries and exercise yards, built for ordinary Romans. The surviving walls are huge and give you a real sense of the scale of imperial Rome. It is much quieter than the Colosseum, and in summer the ruins sometimes host opera performances.

Talking points

  • The complex included baths, gyms and gardens.
  • The standing walls rise many storeys high.
  • It is far less crowded than the big sights.
  • Opera and concerts are staged here in summer.
