Why Córdoba matters

Cordoba was once among the largest and most learned cities in Europe, and today it is a calm, beautiful town of whitewashed lanes. At its heart stands the Mezquita, a mosque with a cathedral built inside it. Around it the old Jewish quarter winds through narrow streets, and in May the locals open their flower-covered patios to visitors. It is easy to cover on foot in a day, but better with two.

Talking points

  • The old city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • In early May the locals open their patios, covered in flowerpots, for a famous competition.
  • Cordoba is on the high-speed line, about 45 minutes from Seville.
