Why Mezquita-Cathedral of Cordoba matters

The Mezquita is unlike anywhere else. Step inside and a forest of red-and-white arches stretches in every direction. It was begun as a mosque in the eighth century and enlarged over time. After the Christian conquest, a cathedral was built in its centre. The result is unique, with the two traditions in one space.

Talking points

  • The interior has hundreds of columns supporting double arches.
  • A cathedral was built inside the mosque in the sixteenth century.
  • The mihrab, the prayer niche, is covered in Byzantine-style mosaics.
