Why Corfu Town matters

Corfu Town has a different feel from the rest of Greece. Centuries of Venetian rule, followed by French and British periods, left it with tall pastel buildings, arcades that look a bit like Paris, and a big green esplanade. Two fortresses guard the old town, and narrow alleys called kantounia run between them. Add cricket on the green, ginger beer and a relaxed island pace. The UNESCO-listed old town is easy to explore on foot.

Talking points

  • The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Venetian, French and British influences show in the streets.
  • Cricket is played on the central green, a British legacy.
