Why Curonian Spit matters

The Curonian Spit is a long, thin strip of sand, with the Baltic on one side and a calm lagoon on the other. It was formed by wind and waves, and people have worked for centuries to stop its dunes from swallowing the villages. Today it is a shared World Heritage Site between Lithuania and Russia, and the Lithuanian half is a calm landscape of pine forest, cycling paths and tall dunes. Ride a bike from village to village and finish on the dunes at sunset.

Talking points

  • It is a shared World Heritage Site, with Lithuania and Russia each holding a part.
  • Cycling is the best way to explore the Lithuanian half.
  • People once planted forests to keep the dunes from burying villages.
