Why Nida matters

Nida is the main village on the Lithuanian side of the Curonian Spit. It has rows of wooden fishermen's cottages, smoked fish stands and a quiet harbour on the lagoon. The Baltic beach is a short walk through pine forest, and the great dunes begin just outside the village. The German writer Thomas Mann once had a summer house here. It is a place for slow walks and long summer evenings.

Talking points

  • Thomas Mann had a summer house in Nida, which is now a small museum.
