Why Dom Tower matters

The Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the country and the landmark of Utrecht. You can climb it on a guided tour for a view over the old centre and surrounding flat land. It stands apart from the church because the nave collapsed in a storm in the seventeenth century, leaving a gap that now forms a public square.

Talking points

  • It is the tallest church tower in the country.
  • The nave collapsed in a storm long ago, leaving the tower standing alone.
  • Climbing it is done on a guided tour.
