Why Oudegracht matters

The Oudegracht is Utrecht's signature sight. Unlike most Dutch canals, it has a lower wharf level where merchants once loaded goods straight into cellars. Those cellars are now cafes, shops and restaurants with terraces right beside the water. Stroll along both levels, or hop in a boat tour for a different view.

Talking points

  • The canal has two levels, with wharves at water height.
  • Old warehouse cellars are now cafes and restaurants.
  • Boat tours leave from several points.
