Dublin

Ireland's capital: Georgian squares, literary pubs, a great castle and the home of Guinness.

Why Dublin matters

Dublin is a compact capital you can mostly cover on foot, and that is half its charm. You can wander from a medieval cathedral to Georgian doorways in ten minutes, then end up in a pub where someone is playing a fiddle. The city has produced a remarkable number of writers, and you feel it in the bookshops, the museums and the way people tell a story. It is also a city of green pockets, from St Stephen's Green to the huge Phoenix Park. Spend a day on history, a day on food and music, and keep one for the coast at Howth.

Talking points

  • Joyce, Yeats, Wilde and Beckett are all tied to the city, and literary walking tours are a local speciality.
  • The Liffey divides the city, and the bridges make good photo stops.
  • The Dart train reaches the sea in under half an hour.
