Why Dublin Castle matters

Dublin Castle is not what you expect. Much of it looks like a grand Georgian and Victorian administrative centre, but behind the courtyard sits a surviving medieval tower and the remains of the city's early defences. The State Apartments are lavish and still used for official events. It tells the long story of how the city was ruled, and how it took charge of itself again.

Talking points

  • Parts of the medieval fortress still survive.
  • The State Apartments are used for official occasions.
  • The Chester Beatty Library is right next door.
