Why Trinity College and the Book of Kells matters

Walk through the arch at Trinity and the noise of the city drops away. Inside the old library, the Long Room stretches away under a barrel-vaulted ceiling, shelves rising on both sides. This is also where the Book of Kells is displayed, a medieval illuminated manuscript of the gospels, covered in tiny and astonishing decoration. Even if you are not a manuscript person, the room is a showstopper.

Talking points

  • The Long Room houses a huge collection of old books.
  • The Book of Kells is a medieval illuminated manuscript.
