Why Euphrasian Basilica matters

From the outside it looks fairly simple, but step in and gold mosaics cover the apse in a blaze of colour. Created in the early Byzantine period, they show saints, a bishop and Christ in glittering glass. The complex also includes a courtyard, a baptistery and a bell tower you can climb for a view over Porec.
