Why Rovinj matters

Rovinj looks like a painting: tall coloured houses packed on a rocky peninsula, boats in the harbour and a bell tower rising above it all. Inside, steep cobbled lanes lead you past small galleries, wine bars and washing hung across the street. At sunset the light turns the stone gold. It has a distinctly Italian feel, which reflects centuries of Venetian influence and a bilingual local culture.

Talking points

  • The old town sits on a former island that was joined to the mainland.
  • A church bell tower is the town's landmark from far out at sea.
  • Italian is still widely understood and seen on signs in Istria.
