Why Golden Gate of Kyiv matters

The Golden Gate was once the main entrance to medieval Kyiv, with a small church above it. The original fell into ruin and the structure you see today is a reconstruction from the 1980s, built over the surviving remains. A small museum inside tells the story of the gate, and a statue of a ruler stands in the park beside it.

Talking points

  • The medieval gate was the main entrance to the city.
  • The building today is a 20th-century reconstruction over the original remains.
