Why Hallgrímskirkja matters

Hallgrímskirkja rises over the city like a stone rocket, its sweeping lines inspired by the basalt columns of Iceland's landscapes. Take the lift up the tower to see Reykjavík's colourful roofs, the harbour and the mountains beyond. Inside, the white concrete interior is bright and simple, and a huge organ fills the hall. Outside is a statue of Leif Erikson, a gift from the United States.

Talking points

  • The design echoes basalt columns and glaciers.
  • The tower gives views over the city.
  • A statue of Leif Erikson stands outside.
