Why Jūrmala matters

Jūrmala is a long ribbon of resort towns along the Gulf of Riga, only half an hour from the capital by train. The beach is broad and pale, backed by dunes and pine trees, and the streets behind it are lined with beautiful wooden villas from the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was a holiday destination for generations, and the main pedestrian street, Jomas iela, has cafés and shops.

Talking points

  • Wooden villas from the 19th and 20th centuries line many streets.
  • Trains from Riga take about half an hour.
