Why Kotor Old Town matters

Get lost on purpose. The old town is a labyrinth of narrow alleys, small squares and old stone palaces that gave this port its wealth in the Venetian era. Every corner has a little church, cafe or laundry-draped window. The heart of the old town is compact, so you can walk it in an hour, but the atmosphere deserves longer, especially in the evening after the day-trippers leave.

Talking points

  • The town grew rich on maritime trade in the Venetian era.
  • Streets are deliberately winding and hard to navigate.
  • Evenings are the best time for atmosphere.
