Why Our Lady of the Rocks matters

According to local tradition, the island was made by sailors who dropped rocks around a sunken ship and an icon, adding more each year after safe voyages. A small boat takes you from Perast in a few minutes. Inside the church there are paintings and silver votive plaques given by seamen. A summer tradition keeps the custom of adding stones alive.

Talking points

  • Local tradition says it was built from sailors' stones.
  • A short boat ride leaves from Perast.
  • The church holds silver plaques from sailors.
