Why Maksimir Park matters

Locals come here to run, picnic and escape the traffic. Paths wind through old trees and around small lakes, and there is a zoo on the grounds. It is one of the oldest public parks in this part of Europe, laid out in the early 19th century. A good place to slow down after museums and shopping streets.

Talking points

  • It was among the first public parks in south-eastern Europe.
  • Several lakes and wooded paths make for easy walks.
  • The city zoo is located inside.
