Why Mdina matters

Mdina was Malta's capital until the knights moved to the harbour. Today only a small number of people live inside the walls, and cars are very limited, so the streets are quiet. Narrow lanes lead to palaces and a cathedral, with views over the island from the bastions. Go in the evening when the day-trippers have left.

Talking points

  • Few cars are allowed inside the walls.
  • Bastions look out over most of the island.
  • It was the capital until the knights arrived.
