Why Mostar matters

Mostar is known for its bridge, and it deserves it: a single stone arch curving over the green Neretva, flanked by medieval towers. Around it, cobbled lanes are packed with copper shops, cafes and restaurants overlooking the water. Watch for the local divers who jump from the bridge in summer. Beyond the old town you will notice damaged buildings, a reminder of the war and of the city's recovery.

Talking points

  • The bridge was destroyed in the 1990s and rebuilt in the following years.
  • A diving tradition from the bridge goes back centuries.
  • Mostar makes a good base for waterfalls and monasteries nearby.
