Why Stari Most matters

The Old Bridge arches high over the Neretva in a single curve of pale stone, and few city views in Europe are more beautiful. It was destroyed in the 1990s and carefully rebuilt using traditional methods. In summer, young men jump from the top into the cold green river below. You can watch from the banks or from a terrace cafe.

Talking points

  • It was rebuilt using traditional techniques after being destroyed.
  • Divers leap from the arch into the Neretva in summer.
  • Terrace cafes give the best views.
