Why Tallinn Old Town matters

Passing through the old city gate is like stepping into a storybook. Tallinn's old town has narrow cobbled lanes, steep red roofs and defensive towers that still stand along much of the old wall. Lower town was the merchant quarter and upper town was the seat of power. Wander the lanes and courtyards, find the Town Hall Square, and look up at the pointed spires.

Talking points

  • Much of the medieval town wall and its towers survive.
  • The old town was divided into a lower merchant town and an upper town of rulers.
  • It is a World Heritage Site.
