Why Tallinn matters

Tallinn feels like a fairy-tale town that has learned to code. The old town is a tangle of cobbled lanes, steep roofs and tall defensive towers, and it is among the best preserved in Northern Europe. Climb to the upper town for views over the red roofs and the sea, then step outside the walls to find a design district full of cafés, galleries and street food. It is a city to do on foot, and it is easily explored in two days.

Talking points

  • The old town is among the best-preserved medieval centres in Northern Europe.
  • Estonia is a pioneer of e-government, and Tallinn is its tech capital.
  • Helsinki is a short ferry ride away.
