Why Peja matters

Peja, also known as Pec, sits right where the mountains meet the plain. The old bazaar has traditional shops and coffee houses, and the nearby Patriarchate monastery is recognised by UNESCO. Just beyond the town, the Rugova Canyon opens into a landscape of cliffs, forests and trails. It is the best base for outdoor activities in the country.

Talking points

  • A UNESCO-recognised monastery stands at the town's edge.
  • The Rugova Canyon begins just outside town.
  • It is the base for hiking in the Accursed Mountains.
