For storytellers

Why Kosovo matters

Kosovo is compact, welcoming and easy to explore. Pristina is a youthful capital with a busy cafe scene, a university crowd and some unusual architecture. Prizren, in the south, is an Ottoman-era river town with a hilltop fortress, mosques and a famous film festival. In the west, medieval monasteries stand near the Accursed Mountains, where canyons and waterfalls are only a short drive from the towns. Prices are low, strong coffee is everywhere, and visitors are often invited to sit and talk. It is a fresh and rewarding place to travel.

Talking points

  • Pristina has one of the youngest populations in Europe, and its cafe scene shows it.
  • Prizren's old town sits along a river beneath a hilltop fortress.
  • Several medieval monasteries are recognised by UNESCO.
  • Mountains and canyons in the west are good for hiking and rafting.
  • Strong coffee and hospitality are part of daily life.
