Why Skógafoss matters

Skógafoss crashes down a wide cliff face, and on bright days a rainbow or even a double rainbow often arcs through the spray. You can walk right up to the base or climb a steep staircase to a viewing platform at the top. From there, a hiking trail follows the river upstream past many smaller falls. Legend says a settler hid treasure behind the falls.

Talking points

  • A staircase leads to the top.
  • Rainbows are common on sunny days.
  • A trail continues upstream past smaller falls.
