Why Templo de Debod matters

Surprisingly, there is an ancient Egyptian temple in the middle of Madrid. It was a gift from Egypt to Spain in the twentieth century, when the temple was threatened by a dam on the Nile, and was carefully rebuilt in a park on a hill. Its pools reflect the sky at sunset, which makes it one of the most photographed spots in the city.

Talking points

  • The temple was moved from Egypt and rebuilt in Madrid in the 1970s.
  • Locals gather in the surrounding park to watch the sunset.
  • It is more than two thousand years old.
