Why Vasa Museum matters

Stand beneath the Vasa and you will feel tiny. This huge warship was built to show off Sweden's power, but it capsized and sank soon after leaving the dock, in the 17th century. It lay in the mud for more than three hundred years, then was lifted and preserved. Today it is displayed in a purpose-built hall, with carved lions, gilded sculptures and the story of how pride and bad design doomed a masterpiece.

Talking points

  • It sank within minutes of setting sail.
  • Most of the hull and carvings are original.
  • The museum explains how the ship was found and preserved.
