Stockholm

Sweden's capital, built across fourteen islands, with a medieval old town, great museums and an archipelago on the doorstep.

Why Stockholm matters

Stockholm is a city that is half water. Ferries glide between islands, the old town of Gamla Stan hides cobbled lanes from the Middle Ages, and a short boat ride takes you to a sprawling archipelago. Museums here are some of the best in Scandinavia, from a 17th-century warship to a pop-music palace. Between sights, do what locals do and stop for fika, coffee with a cinnamon bun, in a candlelit cafe. Come in summer for terrace evenings by the water or in December for markets and lights.

Talking points

  • The city sits where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea.
  • The metro is often called the world's longest art gallery, with many painted and sculpted stations.
  • Gamla Stan is the medieval core and one of the best-preserved old towns in Europe.
