Why Stockholm City Hall matters

City Hall looks like a fairy-tale brick fortress on the water. Inside, the Blue Hall hosts the annual Nobel banquet, and the Golden Hall glitters with tiny gold-leaf mosaic tiles. You can only enter on a guided tour, but the lakeside gardens outside are free and wonderful for sunset views. The architecture draws on national romantic style, and the tower, when open, gives a fine view over the rooftops.

Talking points

  • The Nobel Prize banquet is held here every December.
  • The Golden Hall is covered in millions of small mosaic pieces.
  • The riverside terrace is a quiet spot for photos.
