Why Wieliczka matters

Wieliczka is a modest town that has been tied to salt for centuries. The mine beneath it grew into a labyrinth of tunnels, chambers and lakes, and the miners carved chapels, statues and a whole cathedral-like hall out of the salt itself. Today it is one of the most popular day trips from Kraków, with the main visitor route going down hundreds of steps and riding a lift back up.

Talking points

  • The mine is reachable from Kraków by train or bus in under an hour.
  • Tourists see only a small part of a mine that runs through many levels underground.
