Why Wieliczka Salt Mine matters

Imagine walking down hundreds of wooden steps into the earth, and finding a church. Miners at Wieliczka spent generations carving chapels, altars and statues out of rock salt, and the largest chamber has chandeliers made of salt crystals. The walls glitter and the air is cool and clean. The tourist route covers only a small part of the mine, but it is still memorable, and it is an easy half-day trip from Kraków.

Talking points

  • The chapel's altars, reliefs and even chandeliers are carved from salt.
  • Visitors descend by stairs and return to the surface by lift.
