Why Abisko National Park matters

Abisko sits on the shores of a long lake, in a rain shadow that gives it surprisingly clear skies. That makes it one of the best places in Europe to watch the northern lights in autumn and winter. In summer, midnight sun lights hikes along the start of the Kungsleden trail. The mountains here are wild and quiet, and a short chairlift ride gives a panoramic view over the lake.

Talking points

  • Clear skies make aurora watching reliable in season.
  • The famous Kungsleden hiking trail begins nearby.
  • Summer brings the midnight sun.
