Why Kebnekaise matters

Kebnekaise is the roof of Sweden, a snow-dusted massif far above the Arctic Circle. Hikers walk in from a mountain station via valleys, glacial streams and boulder fields. The summit climb is demanding and weather-dependent, and its height changes with the melting of the glacier on top. Even a day hike in the valley is rewarding, with wide views and a real feeling of the wild.

Talking points

  • It is the highest mountain in Sweden.
  • The summit height changes as the glacier melts.
  • A mountain station provides lodging at the base.

Good to know: Summit routes need good fitness and weather checks; many visitors stop at the mountain station.
