Why Kiruna matters

Kiruna sits well above the Arctic Circle, in the land of the Sami and the midnight sun. The town grew around an enormous iron ore mine and is now being moved, building by building, because the mining is undermining the ground beneath it. Visitors come for the wilderness: husky sledding and aurora watching in winter, hiking and midnight-sun walks in summer, and a hotel made of snow and ice at nearby Jukkasjärvi. It is remote, quiet and unforgettable.

Talking points

  • Parts of the town are being relocated because of the mine beneath it.
  • Aurora season runs roughly from autumn to early spring.
  • The Icehotel is rebuilt from river ice every winter.
