Why Icehotel matters

The Icehotel is built from frozen river water, sculpted into suites, corridors and artworks by artists from around the world. Each winter it is rebuilt from scratch, and when spring comes it melts back into the river. You can sleep on a bed of ice with reindeer skins, or simply visit to see the sculptures. A permanent cold section and summer art spaces mean you can visit outside winter too.

Talking points

  • It is rebuilt from river ice each winter.
  • Each suite is designed by a different artist.
  • The village is about fifteen kilometres from Kiruna.
