Why Akershus Fortress matters

Akershus has watched over Oslo's harbour since the Middle Ages. The grounds are open to walk, with cannons, old ramparts and sweeping views across the fjord. Inside, you can visit the castle halls and a royal mausoleum. It was a royal residence, a prison and a military base over the centuries, and today it's a pleasant green space close to the centre.

Talking points

  • The fortress dates back to the medieval period.
  • The walls give harbour views.
  • The grounds are open for strolling.
