Why Munch Museum matters

Edvard Munch left a huge collection of his work to the city of Oslo, and this museum shows a rotating selection of it across many floors. Paintings, prints and drawings reveal an artist who turned anxiety and love into colour. The building stands on the waterfront next to the Opera House, with a rooftop view and a restaurant. Even if you only know The Scream, you will see a more varied artist.

Talking points

  • Munch bequeathed much of his work to Oslo.
  • The building is a slim tower on the waterfront.
  • It is next to the Opera House.
