Why Albaicin matters

The Albaicin is the old Moorish quarter, a hillside tangle of cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and walled gardens known as carmenes. Climb it slowly, stopping at tiny squares and viewpoints. At the top you look across the valley at the Alhambra. It feels like a village set within the city.

Talking points

  • Hidden walled gardens are called carmenes.
  • The quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Alhambra.
  • The streets are steep, so wear good shoes.
