Why Granada matters

Granada sits at the foot of the snowy Sierra Nevada, and above it all stands the Alhambra, the last great palace of Islamic Spain. Across the valley the white houses of the Albaicin climb the hill, with views back to the red fortress at sunset. Down in the streets, many bars still bring a free tapa with every drink. It is compact, hilly and unforgettable, so bring comfortable shoes.

Talking points

  • Granada was the last Muslim kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula, until the end of the fifteenth century.
  • In many bars here a free tapa arrives with each drink you order.
  • You can look at snow-capped peaks from the city in winter and still reach the coast in about an hour.
