Why Generalife Gardens matters

Generalife was the country retreat of the Granada sultans. A walkway leads through orchards and ornamental gardens, past channels of running water and pools, to a patio of fountains. The sound of water is everywhere. Evening light on the white walls is magical, and the view back toward the Alhambra is great.

Talking points

  • It sits on the hillside above the Alhambra.
  • Running water is the centrepiece of the design.
  • It is included with the Alhambra ticket.
